The importance of self-efficacy was first spotlighted by Albert Bandura in 1977 when he published an article explaining its importance in success for those facing phobias. However, it was immediately evident that self-efficacy plays a role in success of any kind. It has since been studied and elaborated upon by many scientists, psychologists, and even life coaches. 

The widespread intrigue is because self-efficacy predicts if you even pick up a goal, how much effort you will expend towards achieving that goal, and whether you will succeed despite hardships.

Self-efficacy is your belief in your ability to succeed at any task. 

A good sense of self-efficacy leads to making an impressive effort toward your goals because your mindset has already told you that you will succeed. When your pursuit of the task is something you can visualise achieving, you are more motivated to put forth the effort to get there.

The best way to gain momentum is to start with a small, attainable task you know you can do confidently. Then, with each completed milestone, increase the difficulty of the next task slightly. If you set your sights too high on an overwhelming task immediately, you will likely become discouraged when you fail and give up altogether. 

Conversely, if the goals you set have no challenge, you will quickly become bored with the lack of stimulation.

Bandura also found that an effective method of increasing confidence is by observing someone you perceive as similar to yourself succeed at reaching their goals. The more you identify with your role model, the more significant your self-efficacy boost. Living vicariously through someone takes on a whole new meaning with this revelation.

Seeking out others who will give you positive affirmations can increase your confidence.

When you hear encouragement from external sources, your confidence is also increased. Positive affirmations will boost you; however, criticism can drag you down. While constructive criticism is acceptable when given sparingly, overuse can damage your self-efficacy and hinder your quest for boosting morale. Also, the more you respect your chosen supporter, the more effective their reassurance will be.

Be conscious about the mindset and language that you are using.

One technique that should be considered is your internal dialogue. Using positive language when you speak to yourself will increase your self-esteem. Identifying your feelings and how to control them is vital to maintaining a positive outlook about yourself and your capabilities.
